Scholarly Publishing

About This Guide

circular figure illustrating the publication cycle (creation, evaluation, publication, dissemination, preservation, and reuse)This guide provides an overview of various aspects of scholarly publishing, including copyright, publication contracts, open access, and research metrics. The guide's main focus is journal articles, but it touches on book publishing as well. Use the menu on the left to explore its contents.

Depending on your needs, you might want to read the full guide in order, or you might want to seek out just those sections that are relevant to your immediate needs.

Either way, take a moment before diving in to consider the etymology of the words “publish” and “publication.” Both words derive from the Latin word publicare, which means “to make public.” A key part of your work as a scholar is “making public” your research and scholarship — that is, publishing your work for others to read, consider, respond to, and build on.
